Well the day has come! We have to leave mixes are still on the go but we’ll listen to them remotely from now on. We’re grabbing another rental car and going to make our way back to LA. Probably stay the night on the way and then another in LA. Thankyou for having us Weed!

Today while we had some free time we drove out to a few locations nearby to film a new music video with Jessica Turale for one of the songs we’ve just recorded. We hired model who’s from California to feature in it. We went up towards the mountain and found some snow for the band footage which was great fun actually playing with snow around our feet. Safe to say our feet got a bit soggy after a while. Nearly every car that drove past slowed right down and honked, and lots got out to have a chat. A lot of friendly people drive up Mount Shasta!
We’ll be releasing the video with our first single as soon as they’re both ready!

On to mixing

All tracking is done! Just got mixing to go before we leave now! Though this will take a while. We’re mixing in Studio A on the Neve console and so far it’s sounding amazing; the drums are huge and everything else has so much clarity but still blend together smoothly. For the tracks we chose the Neve colours them perfectly, kind of like warming them with an organic, woolly blanket.

VOCALS DONE!

In between vocals we’ve been editing drums making sure they’re all spot on. Also twiddling with a vintage Roland SH-101 Synth and combining it with some pedals to get a nice, low, fuzzy, synthy sound to fill out some parts. Going to get stuck in to some Moog gear soon too!
Then today we finished vocals and got all the main ones done! Just some backing vocals left.

Guitar is all but done. More experimentation fun is to come. But today is for vocals. Sylvia has brought her “magic vocal chain” to the table including the U47 telefunken. Technically known as (the f%^*ing expensive one) by our ever hilarious, but actually extremely knowledgeable sound engineer, Glenn. It sounds amazing nevertheless. Very suited to James’ voice. Almost sounds as good as the drums.

Started the day by lugging over heaps of amps to Studio D; Matchless, Vox, custom Fat Head, Fender, Danelectro suitcase and more. Each heavier than the last, except for the last!
With a good selection of guitars and pedals too James got to work. Dialing in the right tone was an interesting process as we changed amps, guitars and pedals for nearly each section for each song.

Today we finished tracking bass for all the songs! There are a few bits and peices that we might come back to, either that or I’ll play a synth to add something different later.
Just as I was finishing the last song Sylvia’s husband Greg shows up at the studio and said we’re heading out! He had 3 handguns and a pump action shot gun in his car and invited us to go shooting with him. We took a ride out to some place that the locals go to shoot ‘stuff’ and we just shot some random objects. We made quick work of the free Maccas glasses we got earlier!
Was a nice reward for finishing up with bass.

Drums end & Bass begins!

Drums are done! Still some editing to go but there should be no more tracking for Luke.
So today we headed over to Studio D and I got busy and started tracking bass Honing sounds by trying different basses, amps, pedals and pre-amps. Pretty spoilt by the all the toys here. Apparantly one of the Ampeg amps here was owned by The Rolling Stones. The pedals alone provide so many possibilities. Not to mention the amazing desks we get to record through. So awesome having basically no limitations sound wise. Great fun!

Deciding and tracking

Today was the first day of actual tracking and recording First we showed Sylvia those changes and listened to the rest of the songs to decide on the final list. Once we decided, we got stuck in to tracking drums straight away!
We got through most of the songs today and aim to finish tracking drums tomorrow. James and I have been getting our parts down roughly for them too.

Choosing songs

We started going through our songs with Sylvia our producer. We played them live for her and also listened to demos we’d made so we could try to decide which 24 or so NOT to record. We got through about half of them, and Sylvia got us to write new a bridge/interlude for 3 of the songs overnight before we meet with her again tomorrow.
Oh and we went grocery shopping too, so cheap compared to Aus!

We weren’t supposed to start today, but after a bit of a sleep in we setup some drums and amps and jammed out some of our songs in the main studio. It was awesome using such quality and vintage gear.

A Bridge to Weed

We got up at 6 this morning and drove to a beach behind the Golden Gate Bridge to get some early of footage of it. We hung out in the city for a while after that, where we tried buying some warm clothes for our trip north later.
Driving on the other side of the road proved interesting today, at one point we freaked out and ended up on the sidewalk thinking it was part of the road!
We road tripped for about 4 hours to a town called Weed where the studio is!! Now we’re at the studio and settled in to our accommodation which is at the studio. Its so cold here and apparently the studio is haunted, but we don’t care, we’re just so keen to get stuck in to some recording and experimenting!

San Francisco a go go

The next day we got to see Santa Barbara with some daylight hitting it and it’s an awesome place. We made our way up the coast to San Francisco on Highway One. The road was so high, windy and right next to the water which made it a beautiful drive. It took us about 9 hours to get to San Fran. That night we had the best Mexican food, so close to the real deal! We went in to a Karaoke joint but they only had “private” rooms, so we left as soon as we walked in.

LA and Santa Barbara

After a good nights sleep, trying to sleep off the jet lag a bit, we checked out more shops. James bought a new guitar, we grabbed more huge food and checked out possible places to gig for when we come back. We drove to Santa Barbara in the arvo, where we stayed the night right on the beach.

USA!

We made it! It’s been fairly full on since we arrived. The whole time we’ve been trying to buy all those sweet foods and snacks you see on TV and in the movies. We have to remember not to order large drinks and meals though, they’re just too big!
LA was a great experience, we stayed the night on Sunset Boulevard so we were close to a few hot spots.

Well the day is here! We’ve started slowly creeping towards LA, after about 24 hours we’ll be there and I can’t tell you how excited we are!!
Currently in Melbourne waiting in a fairly abandoned part of the airport for our next flight. It’s crazy to think that this day is already here. I guess it’s a good thing it came around quickly or we would’ve had too many songs to choose from. Any time we jammed in the last few months a new song/s would always result from it, if we intended to write them or not. As it is we’ve got 36 songs we have to somehow choose from.
Anyway that’s enough from me for now. SO keen!
We’ll keep you posted!

23 DAYS TO GO…

So here I am, sitting on the back veranda, listening to our 30th completed demo song and enjoying the first few days of the crazy beautiful Tasmanian summer. When I come to the realization that in 3 weeks time we will be leaving this summer songwriting cocoon, and throwing ourselves into a studio nestled in a small Californian town in the middle of their winter. I would complain about the irony of having two winters for the year, but I have always wanted a white Christmas. So fingers crossed. At the moment we are actually trying to stop ourselves from starting any more new songs. You get into a writing mood which is hard to get out of, and as a band we have been doing that for the last few months. A great few months, and the excitement is only building. I think getting to explore a new part of the world and making some music while you are there would have to be near the top of my “favourite things to do list”. We’ll keep you posted, times will be had

THE DATE IS CLOSING IN

Hey everybody and what a good topic to start this new blog on; in case you didn’t know it’s less than a month till we land in California, USA to record our next release! Over the last couple months we have taken a break from doing shows; and have been crazily locking ourselves in lounges, bedrooms and garages to write and finish up demos for a really good list of new solid tunes. Also we have some exciting news related to the self-titled EP; and one of the songs off that to come in the next week. We will be keeping this blog up to date as we get closer to the recording date; and also we will be posting updates, and photos of all the recording process along the way.
